My Nobel Prize Winning Method for Making Videos
I know this video is from a couple of weeks ago (!!!) but one other vital thing at ANY shoot are trash bags. Always clean up after yourself. ALWAYS. Nothing pisses off a client than having to clean up YOUR garbage. Besides, they make great emergency raincoats, they can keep equipment dry (drier?) or keep mud/dirt/crap from being tracked around when used ar doormats or even around your shoes. Ever shoot in a cattle or barnyard? Yeah, shite happens... Good light, good gear, great times! tlr
Wave your arms and hands around, wave your arms and hands around and wave your arms hands around some more! I found all of that very distracting. The info was useful though. Thanks X
Are you still using the same card or design? Curoius to know what your experience is after all these years
16 Kambukka Etna 2 Pack Coffee & Tea Mugs Try this!!!
Could I ask you how well the the short one does at a distance of 4-8'? I make some amateur stuff that I try to keep the quality decent on and want something that can pickup like a quarter of a room and/or two-three people but still be out of frame since I don't have an assistant to keep a longer shotgun perfectly lined up. Audios a weakness of mine and I get the feeling what I'm looking for doesn't really exist :(
This is a very fun question! The short one is great, but NOT for what you're trying to do. These mics are pretty directional, so the two/three people would sound different depending on who's to the side of the mic vs in front of it. A few wired lavs would go a long way to getting you good audio, but you may get into some self-cancellation if they people are sitting close together. It may take some editing each time. Alternatively, a single mic with a wider pickup pattern may be ideal. If I could only choose one mic, I'd choose a cardioid pickup pattern pencil condenser. Any shotgun mic is going to make some of the people sound weird. But a pencil condenser can be more forgiving for that off-axis sound. I overuse and over-recommend something like a RODE NT5. Might get you the sound you're looking for.
For the record, ANY mic at 4'-8' away is going to sound considerably worse than almost any mic that you can get closer. Remember that audio is just air pressure, and the further you get from the source, the more OTHER sounds are going to make it into your mic and compete with your subjects.
@@ShaunHautly Thanks, very helpful to mull over. I often don't have the option to conceal a lav. I might end up giving that NT5 a try; at one point I was thinking of getting a used NTG3 before I realized it wouldn't be good without an assistant so that's within my budget
Can this be plugged directly into a camera if not how?
Depends on the camera. You need an XLR port with phantom power for the NT5 (and NTG, and most condenser mics that don't have built in power). Some cameras have them, most mirrorless cameras do not.
THANK YOU SO MUCH
You're welcome! Though I’ve since made a couple videos updating my thoughts about 32-float. I’ve learned a LOT more than when I made this first video.
Great video! I'm curious if you have a video for best settings in post. I'm sure that would be really helpful.
That's a good idea. I used to use izotope 6 and then a handful of tools from Accusonus. But for the past year, I've just clicked "voice isolation" in Final Cut Pro and that's it. I'll make a video soon about my workflow.
Excellent video. Thank you, sir!
Wonderful message. I'm glad you decided to leave your archive as is. There's something beautiful in sharing your professional and personal journey as it happened ... and without curation. Believe it or not, people do watch those old videos. Or least I do. I'm an early-stage documentary filmmaker and I've learned some uniquely useful tips from your channel. Look forward to more!
Almost no difference for my ears btwn the pencil and the shotgun.
Look into Zojirushi - true one handed open and close.
I am planning to buy the Rode Videomic NTG (For music recording) and contacted Rode dozens of times on the shotgun mic topic. Now i am a bit hesitating on which mic i should buy. Looking at the windy place the Videomic NTG is the best option, but i still need to know if there are better options. So do you (Or anyone that wants to help) have any tips?
Great, insightful video :) thank you. I do have a question, though, if maybe you can help - before I end up replacing it. Essentially, the pre-amps seem to offer a lot of noise when putting the gain knobs above 5 or 6. Do you have any ideas or tips for this, please? I have done some research and it seems it's very common with this unit. I have managed to get a 'middle ground' with what I am needing it for, which is having the PAD on (to -20), the gain to 8, and 'mono' output. This still gives me noise, but is somewhat manageable to some degree in post edit (still learning this side of things). Thank you.
Super helpful! Glad to know I can hang on to my V30 cards still
I recognize this and I think I put it into a cage and make it look professional 😉 Like your videos! They are so thoughtful!
Thanks for the info. I had no idea about the wireless even of its obvious.
xD i do this all the time buying cases and luggage & power banks that i just don't end up using :/ by the time i do come around to use it there's already a newer better one out for the same price i coulda got if i had just waited until i needed it haha
44.1khz 16bit is a format invented to put complete albums on a CD. I will never use that format again. 48khz sounds so much better with just a little larger file. IMHO.
This makes an excellent travel humidor
I've heard that one a few times. It's been a while since I've had cigars, though. Now it holds all my stickers. :-)
Thanks for this. LinkedIn is giving me hard time. I just created an account and now trying to improve it but all of a sudden i was restricted without doing anything on their platform. LinkedIn don't want to accept me even using my passport to verify but they are not accepting it. I fully decided to just leave it like that. I don't want to insist myself in a platform i don't feel accepted. Thank you much❤
website doesnt seem to work anymore everytime i hit submit it shows blank card
I've seen the website go up and down over the past few years. I wish I had another recommendation, but I haven't made a badge since I made these! Sorry I can't be of more help.
we spend money we don't have buying shit we don't need...
And we spend time we don't have making and watching videos about all that stuff. haha
Would love a video about some handler tips.
Let me see what I can get together this month!
I really want to go back to the days when people actually applied for jobs in person and through newspapers.
Yeah, I despise all the pageantry with candidate searches. Sometime I'll make a video about the hire that made me question everything about my leadership, and how it came around to teach me a serious lesson in humility. Not sure how I could have avoided it.
I would if it didn't help me land the best jobs in my career.
I love to hear it! I'm not rooting against LinkedIn, it's great for some people and professions, just wasn't right for me. Congrats!
Great video
Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your experience!
My pleasure!
Concise and clear! Great Video! :D
ntg3 is a muddy mic and you put foam on so no surprise
And different frequencies all move the same speed. 761 MPH at STP. The difference in timing is the amount of pressure inversions over a given time. The time from one pressure maxima to the next is shorter when the wave peaks (local maxima) are closer together.
Just in case anyone was wondering, sound waves don't move up and down the way we graph them. They are longitudinal pressure waves that go in all directions. A local maxima of a 2d graph is just when the pressure is highest, and the minima is just when it is lowest.
I did a huge project for a science museum last year and we did a deep dive into sound and compression waves. It was fascinating, but everything I learned while making it made me think, "welp, that was wrong in my old microphone video." Thanks for some of this clarifying information. Turns out it's even more fascinating than I thought!
dude such a hilarious video. Thanks for making me not regret buying it. :D ... the only use case i see is when dirtbiking an actually muddy environment. Maybe like u said put a phone and a charger when driving... but even than its propably overkill.
It's now found its purpose as my "Sticker Case." I have it filled with all the stickers I've had made and I bring it with me on shoots and pass it around for people to take stickers. Not a "rugged" use, but it's by far the coolest sticker case I've ever seen.
I had this exact thing happen with anything plugged into power that was connected to my A7SIII. This included my Ninja V, so it even transmits across HDMI. Once I put everything on batteries the buzzing went away. I should have tested powering the camera with an external battery, but I didn't. I'll check back in if I do.
Great video; thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Great! I love the first part, I wish more instructional videos would like strait to the point. Details later. Seriously. Great!!! And funny. Thank you!
Thanks for the happy comment!
Just bumped into your channel. I totally agree with your move to get off social media. Visited your website to, impressive story you tell there. I will copy your approach to finding clients via a dedicated website.
Thank you for such a lovely comment! My website needs to be updated as all of our stories change, and my website hasn't been updated to reflect my changes in a while! I should also edit a new reel.....
Oh my gosh! Yaaaaaass! Thanks for sharing this. I am this close 🤏🏻 to deactivating or deleting my LinkedIn. I've invested so much time and energy into my LinkedIn with no meaningful ROI... receiving spammy messages on a regular basis, people trying to sell something or offer you sketchy opportunities. It's kind of just an energy vampire at the point🧛♀️.
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻, Best mic ever! Just as good as the MKH 416...
Man with so many talents. Awesome bro
Thanks! I'm one of those "Jack of all trades, master of none" kind of people. Haha
Most of the posted jobs on LinkedIn are fake.
I'm not surprised to hear that.

Wow - I did NOT know that that's why those H4 recorder mics were in an x-pattern!
#themoreyouknow That always confused me too, until I had someone explain it to me. I used to think it just made it look cool.
Thanks a lot !!!!
No worries!
Hi bro Shaun. Long time no see.
Unbelievable tune
Thanks! I do not care about fishing at all, and I've found myself mesmerized by your past few videos. Glad AJ shouted you out.
No overhead FX3? Pssshht.
After posting that, I had a friend with a RED offer to let me redo it with his V-Raptor hanging overhead. Too bad my rental was due back too quickly.
Wow, I really needed to hear this. I've been questioning my career choice in art over a year now, I feel like this helped clear some of that confusion. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Watch some of Adam Savage's (Tested, is his channel) newest videos. He's got some amazing content about career choices, salary, and work life balance.
Can you run a 3.5mm cable from then f2 into the camera and also record internal to the camera?
Yep!
Zoom also makes an on camera shotgun mic now that records 32 float internally and outputs to camera as well.
Very good. I learned a lot 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
